High School TET Assam Notification

Post Bureau, Guwahati (June 8): Riding on the success in the teachers’ eligibility test (TET) for elementary schools, the Assam education department is now set to hold the Secondary Teachers’ Eligibility Test (STET) for the selection of high school teachers in December this year.
And this, education minister Himanta Sarma claims, will be the first of its kind in the country in accordance with the norms laid down by the National Council of Teachers’ Education (NCTE).
The candidates, after their selection as teachers, will have to get BEd or MEd or BT degrees for pursuing teaching in high and higher secondary schools respectively.
Sarma on Friday announced that the cabinet has already given its approval to the department for conducting STET, and now candidates who want to apply for the posts of high school teachers will have to pass STET.
Sarma said: “Assam will be the first state to hold this eligibility test for selection of high school teachers. After conducting the TET for elementary schools, it’s now time to strengthen the pillars of secondary education.”
Sarma, however, said that the government will consider an exemption period till January 1, 2015, wherein all the teachers without B Ed or M Ed degrees could apply for the posts of high school teachers.
After the exemption period, no teacher without the requisite degrees will be allowed to apply for the posts of high school teachers. The minister said that there are around 8,000 regular vacancies for high school teachers in Assam. The cabinet has also approved the department’s plea for not including viva marks while appointing teachers. A candidate will be appointed on the basis of his/her academic marks, TET marks and marks for other additional degrees.
